The greatest value of NLC is connecting progressives across sectors and communities to create a diverse and dynamic fellowship class.
What do we look for in a fellow? We seek young professionals with a demonstrated talent for leadership and a commitment to progressive values.
Those progressive values include a commitment to justice and a belief that community action, expressed democratically, can and will secure equality of opportunity in a changing world.
We want to know applicants have taken advantage of opportunities they’ve already had to advance progressive values and create change. We want to understand how they will benefit from participating in NLC, but also, how other fellows will benefit from working alongside them.
Typically, fellows are several years beyond their undergraduate years but not yet their 40s. A college degree is not a requirement—experience and progress along a leadership trajectory are. Candidates need to have a sense of the path they will chart through life in order to take full advantage of the training and personal development built into the program.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong sense of purpose and a passion for progressive values. They have shown they can change their communities and act as part of a successful team. We’re looking for results, not a list of credentials.
The best way to get a feel for the applicant profile is to visit various chapter websites and read about their fellows. Start at the national website and explore. Then tell us why you should be a fellow. We can’t wait to meet you.
